Adult-Use Cannabis Sales Drive Strong Growth in Illinois and Massachusetts in July

A Detailed Look at Cannabis Sales in Illinois, Maryland and Massachusetts

We are pleased to share with our readers overviews on three Eastern cannabis markets compiled by BDSA for the month of July. BDSA offers a full understanding of the evolving cannabis market though several offerings, including its GreenEdge Retail Sales Tracking, Consumer Insights, Industry Intelligence and CBD Market Monitor divisions.

BDSA has been sharing data for Massachusetts only since October, so the comparisons to year ago levels aren’t available, but its data set extends for a year for both Illinois and Maryland. Each of these relatively new limited-license markets are very different from the more mature Western cannabis markets, which BDSA has profiled at New Cannabis Ventures as well.

Here is a closer look at each market, as detailed by BDSA:

Illinois

In July 2020, Cannabis sales in Illinois’ medical and adult use channels totaled $94.2 million, growing 22 percent since June. Year-to-date through July, sales have reached $504.4 million.

Flower sales accounted for over 36 percent of overall monthly revenue in July, with $33.9 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for nearly six percent of revenues with $5.6 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, Flower sales increased by 30 percent and Pre-rolled Joints grew by 41 percent.

The Concentrates category, which was the largest segment of the Illinois cannabis market, accounted for 39 percent of total July revenues with sales reaching $36.6 million for the month. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $28.5 million, accounting for 78 percent of the Illinois Concentrates market and 30 percent of sales across all categories.

The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals. The Ingestibles category made up 18 percent of overall sales in July with $16.7 million in monthly revenue. In July, the $16.5 million in Edibles sales accounted for over 98 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining two percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales increased 13 percent and Sublingual sales grew by over 25 percent.

Maryland

In July 2020, Cannabis sales in Maryland’s medical dispensaries reached $40.9 million, growing by eight percent from June and by more than 82 percent compared to the previous July. Year-to-date through July, sales reached $242.2 million, representing a $113.6 million increase from the same period last year.

Flower sales accounted for almost 51 percent of overall monthly revenue with $20.8 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for seven percent of revenues with $2.8 million in sales. Compared to the previous July, sales of Flower grew by 88 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 104 percent.

Concentrate sales accounted for 29 percent of overall July revenues totaling $11.9 million for the month, representing a 14 percent increase from June. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $8.3 million in sales, making up 70 percent of the Maryland Concentrates market and over 20 percent of sales across all categories. Compared to July 2019, sales of Dabbable Concentrates grew by 73 percent, while Vape sales grew by 59 percent.

The Ingestibles category contributed over 11 percent of sales in July with $4.6 million in revenue. In July, sales from Edibles generated 91 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, growing by one percent from June. Sublinguals sales made up the remaining nine percent and declined two percent from the trailing month. Compared to the previous July, Edibles sales grew by 145 percent and Sublingual sales increased by 21 percent.

Massachusetts

In July 2020, Cannabis sales in Massachusetts’s adult use and medical channels reached a combined $92 million, growing by 24 percent since June. Year-to-date through July, total market sales have exceeded $412.7 million. 

Flower sales accounted for 48 percent of overall monthly revenue in July, with $44.5 million in sales. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for nearly 11 percent of revenues with $9.8 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, sales of Flower grew by 26 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 28 percent. 

Concentrate sales accounted for nearly 26 percent of overall July revenues with sales totaling $23.7 million. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $16.9 million in sales. The category made up 71 percent of the Massachusetts Concentrates market and over 18 percent of sales across all categories.  

The Ingestibles category includes both Edibles and Sublinguals while also distinguishing the two subcategories. The Ingestibles category made up 14 percent of overall sales in July with $12.6 million in monthly revenue. In July, the $10.7 million in Edibles sales generated about 85 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining 15 percent. Compared to the trailing month, Edibles sales grew by nearly 15 percent and Sublingual sales increased by 18 percent.
