A Detailed Look at Cannabis Sales in California, Oregon, Arizona, Colorado and Nevada

During April, the eighth month after the onset of the vaping crisis and the second month of the pandemic impacting the market, sales across the five markets totaled $614.9 million, down 7.7% from March’s $666.0 million. March had spiked from $579.9 million in February as customers purchased cannabis ahead of store closures and concerns about limitations on access. Overall sales growth from a year ago among the five Western markets ranged from-28% in Nevada, which saw an exodus of tourists as well as a move to delivery-only, to as high as 49% in Arizona. Oregon grew 40%, while California and Colorado experienced modest growth from a year ago. Concentrates, which represented 24-35% of sales by market, have improved from recent months but remain below the 26-38% share of sales in August before the vaping crisis hit.

Here is a closer look at each market, as detailed by BDSA:

Arizona

In April 2020, cannabis sales in Arizona’s medical dispensaries reached $86.7 million, growing four percent from March. Compared to the previous April, sales in Arizona grew by over 49 percent. Year-to-date through April, sales have reached $310.7 million, increasing by $92.4 million and 42 percent compared to the same period last year.

Flower sales accounted for more than 49 percent of overall revenue for the month with $42.7 million in sales, growing four percent from March. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for just over three percent of revenue with $3 million in sales. Compared to the previous April, Flower sales increased by 60 percent and Pre-rolled Joints increased by 47 percent.

Concentrate sales accounted for about 35 percent of overall revenues with sales totaling $30.2 million in April, growing by six percent from the trailing month. Vape products, the largest segment of the Concentrates category, generated $18.6 million in sales, accounting for 62 percent of the Arizona Concentrates market and 21 percent of sales across all categories. Compared to April 2019, sales of Dabbable Concentrates grew by 65 percent, while Vape sales grew by 33 percent.

The Ingestibles category accounted for 11 percent of sales in April with $9.4 million in revenue. Compared to April 2019 and March 2020, sales in the category grew by 34 and decreased by four percent, respectively. In April, the $8.8 million in sales from Edibles generated over 93 percent of Ingestibles sales overall, while Sublinguals made up the remaining seven percent. Compared to the previous April, Edibles sales increased by 46 percent and Sublingual sales decreased by 39 percent.

California

In April 2020, cannabis sales for state licensed retailers and delivery services reached $252 million, declining by nine percent from the trailing month and growing four percent compared to April 2019. Year to date, sales in California have reached over $1 billion, a nine percent increase compared to the same period in 2019.

Sales from Flower generated $97.5 million in April 2020, accounting for nearly 39 percent of overall revenues. Compared to the trailing month and April 2019, Flower sales decreased by six percent and grew 24 percent, respectively. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for more than nine percent of overall April revenues with $23.2 million in sales.

Concentrates were the second-largest category for revenue in April 2020, reaching $78.1 million in sales and accounting for over 31 percent of total revenue. Compared to the trailing month and April 2019, sales decreased by nine percent and ten percent, respectively. The $60.5 million in Vape sales accounted for 77 percent of the Concentrates category and 24 percent of the month’s overall sales revenue. In April, vape sales fell 12 percent from the trailing month and 16 percent from the prior April.

In April 2020, Ingestibles generated $44 million in sales, declining 13 percent from the trailing month. Compared to April 2019, sales of Ingestibles grew by three percent. Edibles contributed 86 percent of Ingestibles revenue, while Sublinguals made up the remaining 14 percent. Compared to April 2019, the Edibles and Sublinguals categories grew by 13 percent and declined by 34 percent, respectively.

Colorado

April 2020 sales in Colorado’s adult-use and medical dispensaries reached a combined $148.4 million, declining nine percent from March. Compared to the previous April, sales increased by nearly eight percent. Adult-use sales grew by one percent from April 2019 while medical sales grew by 34 percent. Year-to-date through April, combined channel sales have reached $593.1 million, increasing 12 percent from the same period last year.

In April, Flower sales accounted for more than 50 percent of total monthly revenues, totaling at $74.5 million. Flower sales decreased one percent from the trailing month and increased 31 percent from the previous April. Year-to-date sales have increased by 26 percent in the category over the same period last year. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked separately from Flower, generated $7.6 million in sales for April 2020, decreasing by three percent from April 2019 and declining 16 percent from the trailing month.

The $43.6 million in Concentrate sales during April 2020 represented a seven percent decline from the previous year and an 11 percent decline from the trailing month. The category accounted for a little over 29 percent of revenue for the month. Vape products, the largest segment within the Concentrates category, reached $18.4 million in April sales, declining 22 percent compared to April 2019. The Vape category accounted almost 42 percent of Concentrates’ revenue and 12 percent of overall sales for the month.

In April 2020, sales from Ingestibles generated $19.8 million, an eight percent decrease from April 2019. Compared to the trailing month, sales in the category declined by more than 22 percent. Edibles generated $18.6 million in monthly sales revenue, contributing over 94 percent to the Ingestibles category and 13 percent of total revenue for the month. Sublinguals made up the remaining six percent of Ingestibles sales, totaling at $1.1 million for the month.

Nevada

In April, Nevada dispensaries generated $38.3 million in sales. Compared to the trailing month, sales declined by 32 percent. Year-to-date through April, sales in the market have reached $214.8 million, decreasing by one percent over the same period last year.

Flower sales accounted for over 51 percent of overall April 2020 sales. Sales in the category reached $19.6 million for the month, declining 27 percent from March. Pre-rolled Joints, tracked separately from Flower, accounted for nine percent of April sales with $3.3 million in revenue. Compared to April 2019, Flower and Pre-rolled Joints sales have decreased by 14 percent and by 56 percent, respectively.

Concentrate sales in April reached $9.2 million, accounting for about 24 percent of overall revenue for the month. Compared to the previous April, category sales declined by 35 percent. Compared to the trailing month, category sales decreased 28 percent. Vape products, the largest segment in the Concentrates category, generated $6.8 million for the month, contributing more than 74 percent to Concentrates revenue and 18 percent to total monthly sales.

Sales in the Ingestibles category accounted for 14 percent of all revenues, with sales totaling $5.2 million in April and declining by about 37 percent from the previous year. Compared to March, category sales decreased by 34 percent. Edibles made up 87 percent of the Ingestibles category, reaching nearly $4.6 million in April revenue. Sublingual sales contributed the remaining 13 percent.

Oregon

In April 2020, Cannabis sales in Oregon’s medical and adult-use dispensaries reached $89.5 million. Compared to the trailing month, sales in the Oregon market grew by about six percent. Compared to April 2019, sales grew by 40 percent overall. Year-to-date sales in Oregon have reached $311 million, growing by 30 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

Sales of Flower generated $42.7 million in April 2020, accounting for 48 percent of overall revenues. Compared to the trailing month, Flower sales increased by nine percent. Compared to April 2019, sales increased by 66 percent. Pre-rolled Joints, which are tracked as a separate category, accounted for eight percent of overall revenues with $6.9 million in sales.

Concentrates generated $24.2 million in April sales. Compared to the trailing month, sales in the category increased by seven percent. Compared to April 2019, sales in the category grew by nearly 24 percent. Vape products, the largest segment in the Concentrates category, generated $12.5 million in April, contributing 52 percent of Concentrates sales and 14 percent of total monthly revenue.

In April 2020, Ingestibles generated over $12.5 million in sales, a seven percent decline from the previous month. Compared to April 2019, sales of Ingestibles grew by 18 percent. Edibles, which made up 82 percent of the Ingestibles category and 11 percent of overall monthly sales, generated $10.3 million in April 2020.
