Benjamin Ward – CEO
Ben leads all facets of the company’s management and operations, including its strategic direction and execution, finance and industry relations. He brings extensive domestic and global experience in business development, infrastructure development and capital markets to his leadership of Maricann. Ben holds a BA (Honors) and an MBA from Bradford University School of Management (England), the latter with a dual concentration in Operations and Finance.
Terry Fretz – COO
A long-time pharmaceutical executive, Terry was integral in establishing and running two privately held generic pharmaceutical companies. Under his leadership, both organizations were recognized as the fastest growing pharma companies in Canada. Both companies were subsequently acquired by publicly traded multinationals. Terry served as President and General Manager of Watson Pharmaceuticals – Canada before assuming his responsibilities as COO at Maricann.
Scott Langille – CFO
Mr. Langille has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in both Canada and the United States. He was formerly Chief Financial Officer of Tribute Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. (“Tribute Pharmaceuticals”), which was sold to Pozen Inc. in February 2016 for US$160 million to form Aralez Pharmaceuticals Inc. Mr. Langille also served as Chief Financial Officer of Virexx Medical Corp., a biotechnology company, Director, Corporate Finance at Biovail Corporation, Director of Finance at Biovail Pharmaceuticals Canada, Biovail’s sales and marketing division in Canada, as well as Vice President at Biovail Pharmaceuticals Inc., Biovail’s sales and marketing division in the United States. Other prior management positions include Director, Finance at AltiMed Pharmaceuticals Company and Controller at Zimmer Canada. Mr. Langille has a professional accounting designation and an MBA from the University of Toronto.
Steven Bennett, Ph.D. – Scientific Advisor
Dr. Steven Bennett is a molecular biologist with a background in transdermal drug delivery. As Maricann’s Scientific Director, he sources and develops new products, ensuring their scientific and technical rigour. Steven holds two patents and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals. He earned a B.Sc. in biochemistry from Eckerd College, and received his Ph.D. in molecular biology – with an emphasis on neuroscience – from The University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Steven Lem – VP, IT & Security
Stephen’s 30 years of experience includes working with firms such as DuPont, Amgen and Actavis. An astute strategist, he has a wealth of IT expertise in infrastructure, systems, security and application development. Stephen works closely with Health Canada to ensure Maricann satisfies its security mandates. He obtained his B.A.A in Administration and Information Management from Ryerson University, and his M.Sc. from Syracuse University (USA) in Information Technology.
Alexandre Sibilev – VP, Regulatory Affairs
Alex has worked in the pharmaceutical sector for over 20 years, with experience in quality control, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and compliance. Alex ensures quality medication is provided to patients that is consistent, reliable and safe for consumption. Alex holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Moscow State University.
Shawn Alexander – VP, Investor Relations
An experienced capital markets professional, Shawn has worked for years with Ben Ward in raising capital for small-cap private and public companies. Shawn brings his expertise in financial and management controls, supply-chain management and investor relations to his Maricann responsibilities. Prior to working in the capital markets, Shawn spent many years recruiting and retaining physicians, registered nurses and other medical staff for a large multi-disciplinary medical clinic in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe area. Shawn earned his business diploma from George Brown with a major in marketing, and he holds a current Canadian Securities Course credential.
Kelly Cober – Global Project Co-ordinator / Health & Safety Supervisor
Kelly drives project delivery timelines and budgets in our Langton, Ontario growing facility, drawing on more than 10 years of experience in management and training, employee development and project co-ordination. She also provides onsite support for contractors and vendor projects, as well as investor and special visitor events. Kelly is a certified health and safety warden, and an occupational health and safety management representative. She chairs Maricann’s Joint Health & Safety Committee, helping ensure that every onsite employee works in a safe environment. Kelly joined the Maricann team in October 2016.
Sabine Frisch – Exec. Assistant to the CEO
Sabine has more than 30 years of experience in administration and event management for small and mid-size companies from diverse industries such as mining and publishing. Fluent in English and German, she has global work experience with start-up firms and non-profit organizations in Asia, Europe and North America. Sabine is a published author and artist. She holds a degree as an assistant Notary Public from the Notary Institute, Munich Germany.
Neil Tabatznik – Chairman & Director
Chairman of Genpharm Pharmaceuticals Inc. between 1993 and 1999, Neil then created Arrow Canada and was Director of the Arrow Group of Companies,consisting of Oryx Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Cobalt Pharmaceuticals Inc. Neil is Chairman of Blue Ice Capital and Blue Ice Pictures, founder of the Blue Ice Hot Docs Documentary Film Fund, and owner of The Bloor-Hot Docs Theatre.
Raymond Stone – Corporate Secretary & Director
Raymond founded Futuremed Healthcare Products, a healthcare distribution company, in 1985. Futuremed was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2006 and Raymond served as CEO until its sale in 2012 to Cardinal Health, a global healthcare corporation based in the USA. Raymond currently consults to the healthcare industry and sits on various boards.
Dr. Eric Silver – Director
With extensive experience using medical cannabis to treat chronic pain, Dr. Silver co-founded L.E. Medical in 2002, a nutraceutical and natural health supplement company. Dr. Silver is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Teacher in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, with a focused practice in interventional pain management.
